It’s better if you don’t understand; just listen and have a good time. That’s the response Bruno Mars will give you with a smile when asked to describe his sound and music. He would much rather sing, perform, and write his songs than talk about them, but that is becoming more and more unavoidable these days. It might seem that Mars appeared out of nowhere, co-writing, producing and performing on B.o.B’s #1 “Nothin’ On You” followed by Travie McCoy’s chart-climbing “Billionaire”, but he makes one thing clear: “It’s not an overnight success”.
Mars is a multitalented singer, songwriter, producer and musician who feels most at home when he’s performing. Born to a musical family in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was practically raised on the stage. Mars describes his time behind the scenes as important to his development as an artist. “I realized that you have to go into this industry as an artist with a clear vision and understanding of who you are. Being so young when I was first signed, I never really had a sense of who I wanted to be. Now things are really working out because everything that I’m singing, writing and composing is really me.”
On the heels of “Nothin’ on You” and “Billionaire” and as a preview of what’s to come from Bruno Mars, Elektra Records is releasing a 4-song EP aptly titled “It’s Better If You Don’t Understand”. The title is taken from a lyric to “The Other Side”; one of the songs included that features Cee-Lo Green and re-teams Mars with B.o.B. The song depicts the musician’s current routine. “It’s basically a story of the lifestyle you end up living as an artist and how I would describe it to a girl I just met to try and explain, but in the end… It’s better if you don’t understand.”
When asked to describe the music he’s about to release Mars says “it’s hard to put myself in a box. I just write songs that I strongly believe in and that are coming from inside. There’s no tricks. It’s honesty with big melodies. And I’m going to be singing the s— out of them.” The collection of songs on the EP are written from various real-life experiences, where Mars blends his buoyant voice with purposefully simple production. All of the songs are produced and written with his Smeezingtons partner Philip Lawrence.
Although he’s incredibly proud of the recordings, Mars feels the best way to experience the sound is to see him perform live with his band. “That is what I’m most excited for – taking these songs and traveling them around the world.” The only place he would rather be than in the recording studio, is with his band on stage – where he grew up. “I think people are really going to gravitate towards the live show. We turn it into a party.”

This will be a total blow out as Rihanna, Ke$ ha and Nicki Minaj is a very dangerous and wild combination of the hottest celebrities. I would characterized Rihanna like puma and Ke$ ha as a leopard which are both wild cats. Speaking about Nicki Minaj I have to say that she is a very promising rap star that will surely make this trio look cool. Watching them performing live will be something everybody wants to look at. But unfortunately not all of us will enjoy that tour as it is going to be in only in North America.
According to Rihanna the tour will start on July 2 in Seattle and concludes on August 25 in Chicago. They are really going to work very hard because 25 stops at 25 different cities in about 50 days is kind of hard. But as the girls say it will be something new and very solid… so it is probably worth it.
This trio will rock half on America but I am sure most people can get their tickets from their home cities where this tour will not be. The same thing will probably try people from not of US. But booking yourself a ticket can be tough especially when dates are not confirmed.
If you are not sure whether you should participate in that unbelievably promising tour here is what Rihanna said in her recent interview with AOl… “The production is unbelievable and the costumes, we just took it to a whole new level.” So, have you decided now? Well, if not then you still have got plenty of time to think about it because it is a question of time and money. If I were you I would probably go which is most likely going to happen.
Young Money; Smoke And Mirrors, And The Problem With The Rap Supergroup
I am not feeling Young Money, from what I can tell they have a lieutenant that is in jail, a token female rapper that is trying to hold it down but is for all intensive purposes a mainstream artist with a ghostwriter and a singer from back in the day that never could sell records. We have seen rap supergroups rise from obscurity before, and rarely are they are a cohesive unit as they are almost always dominated by a lieutenant who is the artist that people really do want a see, and a host of “hanger on” artists with little if no talent. Young Money is no different than Soulja Boy’s S.O.D. Money Gang, or Ludacris’ crew DTP.
Most rap supergroups fail because they are comprised of an assembly of mediocre talent. It is not that other members in the group cannot flow and that they do not have what it takes to shine on their own. Clearly Nicki Minaj has proved otherwise. But quite often the true lyrical dexterity and wordplay can be found in the skills of just one artist. Supergroups last as long as they do in the court of public opinion because they attempt to make a triple threat out of a few artists, when just one artist should pose that same triple threat. When one artist does that supergroup can rise to the top and even though they eventually split up and part ways, the individual artists can still have somewhat of a career. This is why Destiny’s Child was as successful as it was; Beyonce gave us the illusion of a triple threat (though arguably her movie career could use a lot of work, but she was still given the opportunity to be in a lot of movies), and why we were sad to see them go.
At the same time other groups like TLC we have little sympathy for, because they were all on the same page and needed to work together because their solo careers were abysmal. At the end of the day they needed to stay together, and it is unfortunate what happened to Lisa Lopez. It is no different in rap music; take the group TalibKweli and Mos Def formed, Black Star. Mos Def has a good acting career, and can hold his own. If Young Money can truly prove to us that they are indeed serious about music and the individual artists can hold their own they may succeed but as it stands now it really does sound as though Lil’ Wayne is writing everyones verse and that he is the glue that stands together. I can appreciate their hustle, but if history is any indication these groups do not last for long and it is difficult to see any of them doing anything on their own outside of the group as so far all we have heard from the members are performances on mixtapes.

Videos like this are a catch 22. If I say I hate it, I’m labelled an old school punk. If I say I like it, then I’m a retard like everyone else who will swallow anything that is shoved down my throat by mainstream media. But you know what? I refuse to be apart of the second group I mentioned, so there you have it. “BedRock” is the second single and music video from the rap group/label known as Young Money – a bizarre orgy of rappers who range from Lil’ Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Gudda Gudda, Tyga, and Jae Millz. The video also features R&B artist Lloyd on the chorus.
The concept is a house..err.. mansion party music video that looks like it was filmed by a 12 year old who doesn’t know how to hold a camera properly. You might as well watch this video with a barf bag next to you, even the movie “Cloverfield” was more tolerable (and interesting, I might add) than this. The members of Young Money basically all lounge around the mansion and goof off in their pajamas. The nature of the video is rather fun, but the actual execution (along with the song) is disastrous.
There have been dozens of quality house party Hip Hop music videos, Notorious B.I.G.’s “One More Chance” being a prime example. They even took the liberty of trying to mimic that video by throwing in lots and lots of cameos, ranging from Birdman, Short Dawg, J.R. Smith from the Denver Nuggets, Jay Rock, ZC, Mack Maine, to Nixo. Sorry, but all that ‘dressing up’ is not going to hide how stupid and ridiculous this song and video is. Even the lyrics of the song are childish, did Lil’ Bow Wow’s friends write this song?

The question that may come to some minds is what inspired Battle Of The Sexes war of the genders. Luda told a previous interview with MTV: “A lot of people have been talking about doing an album with a male and female perspective, but it never has happened. I’m just trying to inject the industry with stuff that’s not going on right now. I think we’re gonna win with it — I know we’re gonna win.”

Ludacris excitedly informed nearly 300,000 Twitter followers all over the world that he had employed the help of The Neptunes‘ Pharrell Williams to assist with final touches of The Battle of the Sexes production.
The Battle of the Sexes can be added to the list of other accomplishments that are of particular importance to Ludacris. Aside from music, Ludacris is a businessman. In addition to having a hand in men fragrances he now has his own cognac. He is also a very generous philanthropist. Ludacris’ recent charitable support has been to help survivors in Haiti. He has donated talent, time, and funds to various Haiti earthquake relief efforts, including SOS: Help for Haiti Telethon on MTV/BET.
The Battle of The Sexes Original Plan
The Battle of the Sexes album was to originally consist of Ludacris versus Shawnna, female hip-hop artist. Shawanna’s move to Nappy Boy caused a schedule disruption that resulted in the battle being open to other female artists. This also created a need to bring in some heavy hitters to support the male side of things. Fans who went online and heard available samples were not disappointed, and neither will those who pick up Battle of the Sexes WHEN and where available.
Whether you love hip hop music and can relate to the rapper’s unique style or not, you can’t help but respect the man. There is a whole lot more to this artist than meets the eye. Midwest Hip-Hop And Urban Recording Artists; Still Overlooked, Still Out of The Mainstream
Just finished listening to a bunch of tracks from Black Milk, a rapper/producer out of Detroit that has some incredible tracks. He makes you forget all about Kanye West, a prolific rapper/producer out of Chicago that has worked with a lot of artists from Chicago and Cleveland. He has a better flow, and his beats slaughter anything that Kanye has put out in the mainstream. So it really angers me when I think that he is not getting any mainstream recognition.
The only artists from the Midwest that are getting any recognition these days seem to be Kanye West, Eminem, Kid Cudi, and John Legend. That is such a minute sampling of what the region has to offer it isn’t even funny. Back in the seventies Ohio owned the funk scene like it was no one’s business. Groups and artists from Dayton and Cincinnati were known throughout the country. Roger Troutman, from a scrappy town named Dayton is still being sampled to this day.
Even Akron was able to push an artist here and there to the forefront. Devo was formed with members from Akron and Kent (a suburb). I’m not saying that the South and the West aren’t making good music. I’m not suggesting that there aren’t great hip-hop artists in New York anymore. But the artists in the Midwest have been neglected for too long.
It seems as though a Midwest artist has to sell their soul to the devil to get any recognition. Kanye West had to go with Roc-A-Fella just to get put on. We all know that the future of hip-hop is in the Midwest. The South is played out; all of those generic digital beats, as great as they are, can get stale after a while. Plus the South still lacks the diversity; truly great artists are often marginalized and left on the sidelines and we get garbage like Soulja Boy.
It is because no one wants to be in the Midwest anymore? It is because the jobs left for the South and greener pastures? Is it because the intellectual capital has been drained? Despite everything that is going on, there is no dearth of artistic talent in the region. Perhaps the struggle is part of the catalyst for the great music that is coming out of the region. The music companies are a lot smaller and do not have the distribution networks that the companies out on both Coasts (and the South) have. Keep bringing that great music. One day the rest of the world will know what we knew all along, and the mainstream will finally catch up. Until then we have Lil’ Wayne, Nicki Minaj, hmm, I think I’ll turn off my radio for a minute …

Billboard Music Awards: Britney, Rhianna Sizzle, Beyonce Awarded
IT WAS a red carpet night for the musical world in America at the Billboard Music awards, which honour artists according to their standing in the Billboards music charts. The night was filled with music, high-end performances, and some acknowledgements in addition to the Billboard trophy and champagne. Britney Spears and Rhianna sizzled together in the award function, which took place yesterday. Beyonce was acknowledged by her mother and first lady Mahielle Obama for her outstanding career and some memorable numbers.
Eminem, Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber and Rhinanna were among the most awarded winners for the night. The function, which was hosted by Hangover Part II famed star Ken Jeong, took place in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night, May 22.
Britney Spears teamed up with Rhianna and rocked the crowd with their number S&M. Later Britney was joined again by Nicki Minaj to groove on ‘Till the World Ends’. Beyonce stole the show with her latest hit Run the World (girls) and was later honoured with the Millenium award, which commemorated her achievements as a singer and an artiste who always inspires with her work. Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s mother Tina, gathered up on the stage to honour the star and sang praises as to what a beautiful soul Beyonce was and that she was a much greater human being than she was an artiste.
Neil Diamond bagged the icon award. Justine Beiber took home 7 tropies and also got the best new comer award. The teenage heartthrob was accompanied with singing superstar Selena Gomez, who graced the occasion looking stunning in a black gown. Eminem, the rapper also got 6 awards and was also named the top artist of the Year. Taylor Swift, who is known for her folklore was over the moon for all her trophies.
The Billboard Music Award was also the style fiesta where everyone was trying to outdo the other. Rhianna arrived in a white pant suit with her blazing red hair in stark contrast to her outfit. Taylor Swift looked sophisticated in a floor-length off shoulder bonze gown and her red painted lips complemented her Moulin Rouge style. Justin Beiber looked quite childish in his golden blazer, opposite his hot girlfriend, Selena Gomez who wore a full length black gown.
